What do you do with a person who’s out of control and won’t listen to reason? Especially if that person might be you?

When I’d taken Hope Sinclair and her sister to New Zealand to meet my grandfather, I’d known I’d be making the return journey as her husband. I hadn’t reckoned, though, on the demons of my past coming back to threaten our future. And, as always, I hadn’t reckoned on Hope.

I had hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of employees to tell me I had better judgment and more self-discipline than most people, and neither my self-control nor anything else I possessed had been won the easy way. That was why I was a New Yorker with a fashion empire instead of a dirt-poor Maori boy in New Zealand with too much tattoo, too many muscles, two alcoholic parents, and not much more. So why did Hope continually dig in her heels and refuse to go along with my perfectly rational plans? And why did I keep compromising?

Because I couldn’t resist her, couldn’t say no to her, and couldn’t stand to see her unhappy, that was why. And there’s more than one way to bring a strong man to his knees.

NoteThis is a full-length, 400-page novel, Part 2 of a series that is resolved in Part 3. It contains one Maori multimillionaire with control issues, one fierce blonde with a mind of her own, and some very dirty loving.

Disclaimer....I typically don't like series books, but this book is AMAZING and I CANNOT wait for the next book.

I really liked the plot in this book, which is tightly wound with the strong and well developed characters. Knowing that it is a series, you can somewhat guess where it's going to end up, but it's full of twists and surprises along the way. I picked it up looking for engagement only along the characters and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the path it took....definitely kept me on my toes.

As for the characters, Hemi is the typical man's man who wants to take care of his woman and steps in it over and over and over and.... Because his love for Hope blinds him of how his strong need to take care of Hope can feel confining.

Hope is both strong and weak...her strength is that she knows where she's weak. Everyone around her, including Hemi ... And the trainer ...treats her as weak and she always manages to surprise by showing mettle and bringing out her steel backbone.

The supporting characters are realistic and well developed. Karen is a teenager full of sass, confidence, and self-importance...she leaves shoes laying around, pushes back on both Hemi and Hope, yet is remarkably clear eyed with what she wants and why.

I've read all of Ms. James' books and am amazed at how she's grown as an author. This isn't the "don't hate me, I'm beautiful but don't know it" plotless romance (which we all need), but rather a well thought out, rich plot book.....with lots of spice. Some authors lead with the spice and toss in a few shallow characters with only a misunderstanding as a plot. Not Ms. James. This book could stand alone without the spice ...

Typically I read a book and am on to the next. The ending was quite a cliffhanger and I've found myself thinking about how it's going to pick up and end. I am anxious for the series to continue.

Fractured Not Quite a Billionaire Book 2 eBook Rosalind James Reviews

“Fractured” is part two in a trilogy that does a deep dive into the relationship between Hope Sinclair and Hemi Te Mana. Part One, “Fierce”, ended where most romance novels end – at the engagement. Part Two examines what happens when the relationship is put to the test. Hemi has kept a lot of secrets from Hope – and the story follows their revelations and her reactions. The genre labels men like Hemi as “alpha” but I was calling him a few other names (some starting with “A”) as I read this story. Then I realized that he was just human – as insecure as the rest of us trying to control what he could and not always making the right decision. And Hope, who had faulty role models of her own, was afraid she was going to end up like her mother. The author, Rosalind James, does a great job of weaving the scars from both Hope and Hemi’s dysfunctional childhoods throughout the story in a realistic way.

Couple of things I really liked about this book

1. I especially enjoyed reading Karen’s part in the story. Hope’s sister is growing up, reacting like a normal teenager.
2. Hope’s co-workers – mean girls get older but they don’t always grow up.
3. Hemi’s Koru (grandfather) – if Fractured is the “Empire Strikes Back” of the trilogy, I guess Koru is the Yoda?
4. The book’s point of view goes between Hemi and Hope, so you don’t get just one side of the story. I like having access to both of their inner thoughts.

We have been trained by traditional books in this genre to expect a happy ending by the end of act 3 – spoiler alert – it doesn’t happen in “Fractured”. This wasn’t an easy read – there were times when I had to put my e-reader down and walk away. But I always came back to it. I wanted to know how it ended. And I can’t believe we have to wait until August to read the final installment of the series!

Fair warning – the sexual content is a bit steamy but supported by the story.
Hemi Te Mana didn't become a rich man by standing around. He is a hard working, driven, alpha man and he generally gets what he wants. It just happens that what Hemi wants this time can't be achieved by using the same methods that he uses in business. Hemi wants Hope, woos her awkwardly (since he 'doesn't do relationships, just arrangements) and when it looks like the prize is within reach, he is stymied by several stumbling blocks that don't respond to his normal methods.

Hope, on the other hand, wants Hemi as well, but not the alpha male multimillionaire Hemi. She wants the Hemi who helped her when her sister was suffering from a brain tumor, or the Hemi who researches historical facts about the Golden Gate Bridge because Hope was excited to see it for the first time. In Fractured, we don't get to see much of this Hemi - he thinks he has won the prize, and he loses his focus on the end result.

Rosalind James has done it again, with the second of a three book series about these two intriguing characters. Fractured can take you from Hope's tears about making the leap into Hemi's world by moving from her tiny rent controlled apartment, to laughing out loud a few pages later, when she describes Josh, Hemi's assistant, as a member of the "Te Mana School of Unruffled Manliness."

I am fiercely hopeful that things will work out.....
